Scribner’s next generation of shade is officially in the ground.
Ten new trees were recently planted at the Hunt Family Sports Complex and the Mohr Auditorium through the Ten Free Tree Initiative, with contributions from PlantNebraska and Great Plains Nursery.
They’ll need some time before anyone can spread a picnic blanket beneath them, but the planting continues a longstanding commitment to keeping Scribner green.
This marks Scribner’s 20th year as a Tree City USA community.
Communities must qualify annually by maintaining a tree board or designated department, having a public tree care ordinance, investing in tree care and holding an Arbor Day observance with an official proclamation.
That investment includes planting, pruning and maintaining public trees, with city staff time and qualifying volunteer hours counting toward the effort. In Scribner, volunteers devote time and hard work to planting, watering and tending community green spaces, keeping the town attractive and welcoming for residents and its visitors.
PlantNebraska, formerly the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum, helps communities strengthen their public landscapes. The organization notes that extreme weather, insects and disease threaten Nebraska’s community forests, making continued planting and proper care essential.
For Scribner, these 10 trees are another step toward keeping the community green for the people who live here now and those who will call it home next.
